Evercool Harddisk Drive Cooler Review
Introduction
I got this drive cooler for a 200gb Maxtor hard drive that was running a bit hot. This cooler works very well, and does exactly what it is supposed to do. It was cheap at Xoxide, and the shipping time was *really* fast.
The Box
The
box is basically a small, thin sheet of plastic wrapped around the part
and and a small sheet of cardboard. It managed to shake itself almost all the
way out of the box in transit, which was somewhat disappointing. Fortunately, it
all works ok.
The front of the box has the name, which appears to be redundant, Hard Disk Drive Cooler? It also has "Keep your system running cool" and "reduce your drive temperature" written all over the place.
The back of the box has the specs for the fans, and a feature list.
The Cooler
The
cooler itself is (ugly) gold-colored with two fans mounted on top. One fan pulls
air onto the drive, while the other fan pushes air from the drive. This keeps
the air circulating, and should help the temperature stay lower.
For power, the cooler uses a simple 4-pin pass-through plug.
As for the fans, they are both 40mm or 50mm, and move 10cfm of air. They also spin at 4500 rpms, so they have a bit of a whine to them.
Installation and Performance
Installing
the cooler is just a matter of taking your hard drive, and screwing the cooler
on top. Very simple, and very quick. The only thing that you have to watch out
for is clearance, with the cooler on, your hard drive will take up about 2 bays
in height total.
Once installed, I took a reading off of my drive. With the cooler on, my hard drive surface temp dropped by about 14 degrees F, which is great.
Conclusion
This is a great cooler. Because it is the same price as the Vantec Cooler I reviewed, I would recommend this one over the other, just because it has a better cooling setup.
