Logitech MX510 Optical Mouse Review
Introduction
This mouse is now 2 versions old, but I feel that it can still compete with the latest versions, especially if you don't have $50 for a new mouse.
Basic Mouse Design
The mouse is blue, with black highlights. It is no doubt *the* best looking
mouse I have seen. This beauty comes at a
cost. The
clear plastic that covers the paint attracts fingerprints and dirt like a magnet
attracts metal. What I end up doing is shutting down my computer, and wiping it
down with a lint-free cloth.
It is right-handed only, which may be an issue for left-handed people. Ergonomically though, it is perfect for right handed users. All of the buttons, with the exception of one are easy to hit.
It has a grand total of 8 buttons, and a scroll wheel. If you are looking for
a mouse wheel that tilts, you might as well skip this review, since it doesn't
have one. It does, however, have notches on the scroll wheel, so gamers can tell
if
they have switched weapons yet.
There are the obligatory 2 left and right mouse buttons, the only thing worth
noting about them is that the buttons are all one piece with the rest of the
mouse. It is possible that over time the plastic could bend or break and become
unusable. Between the two buttons is the scroll wheel/button 3, which normal;
nothing really special sets it apart. Above and below the scroll wheel are two
"cruise control" buttons. They enable you to continually scroll through a
document without having to move your fingers. They can be reprogrammed using the
Logitech software if you don't want to use them for that. Above the cruise
control button there is the switch application button. I personally find this
button hard to hit, and not very useful. It uses the Logitech software to switch
applications,
but it slower than just alt-tabbing. Finally, above the thumb rest, there are
back and forward buttons. These are useful, and can be reprogrammed in games.
Sensitivity
This mouse has good sensitivity. I don't have any benchmarks for this, so I am just giving my opinion. It works great for me. :D With the drivers installed, it does get to be a little bit fast, but not enough to be obnoxious.
Software
The
software is very simple to use. It lets you change button assignments on the
mouse to do different commands in Windows.

There are numerous different actions that you can assign to one of the
buttons. You can even make them do keystrokes. I personally change the
quick-switch button to something else. For those of you who are wondering, here
is what the quick switch looks like.

Using the software, you can also change the scroll amount, ranging from 1
line to an entire page, and
play
around with the speed of the mouse.
Conclusion
This is another great product from Logitech, especially now that it is down to around $25 on NewEgg. It is sturdy, and I intend to use it till it falls apart.
